President Mahama Breaks Ground for Blekusu Coastal Protection Project Phase II in Ketu South

His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project (Phase II) at Agavedzi in the Ketu South Municipality. The event marked the official commencement of the critical infrastructure project aimed at safeguarding coastal communities from the devastating effects of tidal waves and coastal erosion.  

The ceremony was graced by prominent dignitaries, including the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu; H.E. Edward Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Council of State; His Eminence Gabriel Kwamiga Atokple Tanko, Member of the Council of State representing the Volta Region; Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Minister for Foreign Affairs; Hon. Abla Dzifa Gomashie, MP for Ketu South; Hon.Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources; Members of Parliament, Ministers, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MDCEs) and traditional leaders.

In his address, President Mahama reiterated his administration's commitment to combating climate change and protecting vulnerable coastal communities. He highlighted the success of Phase I, completed in 2015, which shielded Azizadzi, Horvi, and Blekusu from tidal waves, and stressed the urgency of Phase II to extend protection to Blekusu, Agavedzi, Solakope, Amutinu, and Adina.  

Hon. James Gunu, Volta Regional Minister, expressed profound gratitude to President Mahama for prioritizing the project, emphasizing its transformative impact on communities long plagued by coastal erosion.  

Executed by Messrs Amandi Holdings Limited, the project involves constructing 37 armor rock groynes at 220-meter intervals, coupled with land reclamation, to fortify an eight-kilometer coastline. With a 48-month completion timeline, the initiative promises to restore stability and livelihoods to the affected areas.
