The Public Relations Officer for the Ghana Education Service in Awutu Senya East, Mr Emmanuel K. Asabre Arthur has outlined some of the major challenges facing teaching and learning in the Municipality
In Teachers' Day discussion on ITV’s morning show dubbed "Ghana Daakye” the P.R.O said one of the major challenges is the Insufficient classrooms which has resulted in overcrowded students.
Mr. Asabre said the whole Municipality has only 49 public schools including a cluster of schools, due to this some classrooms has over 80 students which makes teaching and learning difficult and ask the Authorities to do something about it as a matter of agency.
The PRO, Emmanuel K. Asabere and Rev. William Baako, the president of National Union of Private schools Ghana highlighted both the rewards and challenges that comes with teaching in Ghana.
Both speakers described it as a “calling “ driven by the joy of seeing a student succeed. Mr. Emmanuel shared how a positive feedback from a former students brings deep satisfaction, while Rev. Baako emphasized the spiritual fulfillment of shaping such young minds.
Rev. Baako also addressed major issues that are faced by the private sector when it comes to education. He emphasized about the inadequate support of private schools, where textbooks shortages and overpriced . He highlighted on how taxes are also burdens to the private schools and due to this some schools can not afford to pay their teachers. Rev. again cited the issues of school placement this year and gender mismatches during placement. This has been the on going concern of the education system recently.
Both teachers then urged parents and communities to collaborate more closely , reinforcing this year’s theme “Teaching as a collaborative profession “. While acknowledging support from some officials , they appealed for more investments in teachers and schools equally to ensure quality education
