Galamsey ( illegal small scale- mining )is a serious and existential threat to Ghana
A social commentator, Peter Obeng Duodu described it as a major crisis and a menace to our nation.
Speaking on the “Ghana daakye” show on ITV morning broadcast the Former Movement for change member said the issue has reached a critical juncture , forcing the nation to unite in a concerted effort to end it.
Mr. Obeng Duodu acknowledges that while there are many press issues in the nation, the environmental , social and economic damaged caused by galamsey has catapulted to the top of the nations agenda.
He added that the president’s decision to consult the Council of state and the security Agencies about the pressing issues on illegal mining is majorly appreciated because It takes a lot of effort and patience to do this.
This suggests a recognition that tackles the deeply entrenched issue requires a robust, security - oriented strategy.
NDC Former youth organizer for Domeabra - Obom constituency George RE-BORN Ayitey Gideon pleas that the issue of galamsey should be depoliticize . He argues that it should be treated as a national security threat, an "A" level threat”, not as a political football . The success of the "Naimos" initiative is said to depend on consciousness of its leaders to “stand for the nation” rather than political interest.
The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) is a special-purpose unit established under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources (MLNR) to coordinate, monitor, and lead intelligence-led field operations against illegal mining (Galamsey) activities across Ghana.
However a strong undercurrent of skepticism is present. People do believe that the issue is being treated as more of a rhetoric than action driven. A more serious allegation is raised that the president is prioritizing politics over the concern of the nation.
Mr. AYITEY added that the demand for result is a major sentiment of the people. One strong recommendation is for the government not to set a timeline for its “Naimos” initiative. Failure to show results within a period of time will trigger a state of emergency.
