We're not selling ECG; we are simply looking for a partnership in its revenue collection, the Energy Minister emphasized.

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has refuted claims that the government intends to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen program on Thursday, February 20, he clarified that the government is only pursuing a partnership to enhance revenue collection within the company.

"We have not stated that we are selling ECG. Let no one misquote me. Our focus is solely on partnering in the distribution aspect, specifically regarding billing and collection activities," he emphasized.

He noted that this initiative aims to tackle inefficiencies in ECG’s operations, particularly in revenue mobilization.

Mr. Jinapor pointed out the challenges faced by ECG’s current billing and collection system, sharing a personal experience to illustrate the issue. "I can honestly say that in my home, they haven't collected the bills for three months, and that is one of the problems we are working to address," he disclosed.

This situation underscores the urgent need for reforms to ensure ECG operates more efficiently and becomes financially sustainable.

The Minister reassured Ghanaians that the government is committed to strengthening ECG, not privatizing it. He urged the public to ignore misinformation and support efforts to improve the company’s performance, especially in revenue collection, to enhance service delivery nationwide.
