Akonta Mining's Illegal Activities in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve

On April 22, 2025, the Minerals Commission of Ghana issued a stern warning regarding the illegal mining activities conducted by Akonta Mining Limited in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve. This announcement highlights the serious implications of operating without the necessary permits and the environmental concerns associated with such actions.

The Minerals Commission clarified that Akonta Mining does not possess the required environmental or operating permits for its operations in the designated mining lease area. Specifically, the company holds a prospecting license that was withdrawn earlier, which further complicates its legal standing. The lack of a valid mining lease not only violates Ghanaian mining regulations but also jeopardizes the ecological integrity of the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve.

According to the Commission, the company has not met the essential requirements to engage in mining activities, which include:

- Environmental Permit: Issued by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

- Operating Permit: Required to undertake mining operations.

- Mining Lease: Necessary for the legal extraction of minerals.

The absence of these permits indicates that Akonta Mining's activities are illegal and could lead to significant environmental degradation in the forest reserve.

The Minerals Commission's investigation revealed that Akonta Mining's operations in the Tano Nimiri Forest Reserve not only violate legal frameworks but also pose a threat to the local ecosystem. The company is urged to cease its activities immediately, and all relevant authorities are called upon to enforce the law. Protecting Ghana's natural resources is critical, and adherence to legal requirements is essential for sustainable mining practices.
