Illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, is one of Ghana's biggest challenge. It causes havoc not only on the environment but also on the health of residents in mining communities. Reports indicate that poor sanitation and abandoned mining pits are exposing residents to severe health risks.
Residents in illegal mining communities are facing serious health challenges. Cases of cholera and typhoid fever are common due to poor sanitation. In addition, open pits left uncovered after mining have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, leading to frequent malaria infections and the other mosquito transmitted diseases.
Dr. Godfrey Andor, CEO, Georgina Health Care and Consultant
during an interview on the Ghana Daakye programme on iTV, said that the illegal mining also has long term effects such as deformity in children during birth. He, therefore, called on the Government to implement a lasting solution. He also called on traditional leaders and pastors to join the fight against illegal mining.
