Five people have been confirmed dead and several others injured after violent clashes in Sehwi Agyemadiem, located in the Juaboso District of the Western North Region.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, March 11, between rival groups of illegal timber loggers. Reports indicate that the violence erupted over disagreements about control of valuable logging areas.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with both sides using weapons, including machetes and pump-action guns.
During the conflict, a Mitsubishi pickup truck (registration number GE 9075-17) was set on fire.
The identities of the deceased have not yet been released, but it is believed they were part of one of the fighting groups. Their bodies have been taken to the mortuary, and the injured were quickly transported to hospitals in Sefwi Asawinso for care. In response to the violence, police have been sent to the area to restore order and investigate the incident.
Authorities are also working to find those responsible for the clashes.
This event has raised concerns about the increasing issue of illegal logging in the region. The illegal cutting down of trees for profit is a major cause of deforestation in the Western North Region. Experts warn that ongoing destruction of forests could harm biodiversity, disrupt climate patterns, and affect local communities.
Local leaders, including Nana Ofori Ahenkan II, the chief of Sehwi Boinzan, have called on the government to take urgent action against illegal logging.
