A tense scene unfolded at Obuasi on Saturday, November 29, 2025, when the Dompoasehene, Nana Kwabena Ponko, was shot in what authorities believe to be a targeted assassination attempt.
The incident happened during the final funeral rites for the late mother of the Obuasi West MCE, Faustilove Kannin, drawing hundreds of mourners to the grounds. Just as the Dompoasehene took his seat, an unidentified gunman reportedly approached and opened fire, striking the traditional leader and causing immediate chaos.
Witnesses described the shooting as sudden and shocking, forcing people to scatter as security and volunteers rushed the injured chief into a waiting vehicle. He was taken to the Obuasi Government Hospital, where he is receiving urgent medical care.
In a swift response, some attendees—together with security personnel—managed to overpower and arrest the suspected shooter. He was handed over to the Ghana Police Service, which has already begun a full-scale investigation to determine the motive behind the attack and whether accomplices were involved.
The shooting has stirred concern across the Ashanti Region, with many calling for increased protection for traditional authorities and public figures during major gatherings.
More updates will be provided as the police release official details on the suspect and the circumstances surrounding the attempted assassination.
